Below you will find our “10 commandments” for planning during the months / weeks before leaving:
01. How do I finance my stay: Is it possible to get a scholarship?
02. Which vaccinations are necessary?
03. Do I have all necessary insurance?
04. Are all my documents valid (passport, identity card, etc.)?
05. What methods of payment do I need for my trip?
06. Is everything organised for the journey: for example the train to the airport, the pick-up at my destination?
07. Travel luggage: not too much, not too little?
08. Have I collected all the useful addresses for my destination: general and emergency contact information?
09. Have all formalities been considered, for example an international driving licence, etc?

10. Is the return journey organised?

I think this checklist is very good. Another think one should think about is how to stay in touch with family and friends. To buy a prepaid card in UK is for me absolutely neccessary and I also bought a cute little Netbook. I installed Ubuntu on it and bought a SD Card for more memory and now it's perfect. Skype is for me the best alternative to keep in contact. Another thing I did was to buy a Kindle. I'm a real bookworm and so that's a good investion for me. ;) Definitely. Feel free to recommend me books. :D 

I booked a flight with EasyJet, a budget flight. It was a bit difficult to book because you have to add and buy for everything extra, but well, what to expect - it's a budget flight. I'll tell you afterwards how it was.

Since one suitcase wouldn't be enough I'm going to send cardboard boxes with clothes and shoes to the UK. I used this site Posttip to find a favourable package service. Let's hope my clothes and shoes will arrive safe and sound. ;) I'll keep you posted.

Ich finde diese Checkliste sehr gut. Auch sollte man überlegen, wie man mit der Familie und den Freunden in Kontakt bleiben kann. Ich werde mir auf jeden Fall in England eine SIM Karte kaufen und habe mir jetzt schon ein kleines Netbook gekauft. Nachdem ich Ubuntu darauf installiert habe und dazu noch eine extra SD Speicherkarte, ist es jetzt perfekt. Skype ist natürlich die beste Möglichkeit in Kontakt zu bleiben!
Außerdem habe ich mir noch einen Kindle gekauft, da ich eine absolute Leseratte bin und es sich mit Büchern etwas schwierig gestaltet hätte. Für mich also eine absolute Investition! :D Ich freue mich über jeden Buchvorschlag! ;)

Den Flug habe ich bei EasyJet einer Billigfluggesellschaft gebucht. Die Buchung hat sich etwas schwierig gestaltet, da man jede Kleinigkeit extra hinzubuchen und bezahlen muss, aber was soll man anderes von einem Billigflug erwarten. Ich erzähl euch später wie es war.

Da mir ein Koffer nicht reicht, werde ich noch zwei weitere Kartons nach England schicken. Hilfreich war hierbei die Seite Posttip, mit der man über den Tarifrechner günstige Paketservices finden kann. Hoffentlich kommt dann auch alles sicher an. ;) Ich halte euch auf dem Laufendem.

Telephone Interview

Before I forget to mention it, my contact person from the agency was a really nice one. This particular person also called me the next day after handing over my application and told me they already have an interested hotel and sent me information about the hotel and some tips for the interview. The hotel decided on a date for the interview and I called the hotel at the agreed time. 

I was quite nervous, but it was great and - to my surprise - I was told they'd give me the placement. 

It was after the interview that I got to know that the agency wouldn't search for another placement for me, because I already 'have' one. So the only option for me was to agree to that placement. But well - I was lucky. 

Afterwards I received a placement confirmation which I also had to sign. Anyway it was just a confirmation, no contract. This one will be taken out when I'm there. That makes me a bit anxious. 

Nevertheless I had/have a placement. ;)

Bevor ich es vergesse zu erwähnen, meine Kontaktperson von der Agentur war sehr nett. Diese spezielle Person hat mich auch einen Tag nach Einreichen meiner Bewerbung angerufen und mir mitgeteilt, dass sie schon ein Hotel gefunden haben, das interessiert wäre. Ich bekam noch Informationen über das Hotel und Tipps für das Telefon Interview zugeschickt. Das Hotel schlug ein Datum vor und zur ausgemachten Uhrzeit rief ich dort an. 

Ich war ziemlich aufgeregt, aber es lief gut und - zu meiner Verwunderung - sicherten sie mir die Stelle gleich zu. Es war nach diesem Interview, dass die Agentur mir mitteilte, dass sie, da ich ja jetzt eine Stelle hatte, sie mir kein weiteres Angebot suchen würden. Ich hatte also gar keine andere Wahl als Ja zu sagen. Jedoch hatte ich wie gesagt Glück.

Danach erhielt ich noch eine Bestätigung, die ich unterschrieb. Es handelte sich hierbei jedoch wie gesagt um eine Bestätigung und noch um keinen Vertrag. Dieser wird erst in England gemacht. Was mich etwas beunruhigt. 

Jedenfalls hatte/habe ich eine Stelle. ;)

First steps

Before you chose an agency make sure to ask them where they mostly organise the placements. In citys or the counrtyside. I made the mistake and didn't ask. Well, it's easy to be wise after the event. I prefered a hotel in a bigger city, but 'overlocked' the phrase on the agencys site which says 'The hotels are located in the most beautiful regions of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.' Which actually means: No placement in big cities. Also they organise ONE placement. (That's at least what they told me.) So just make sure to ask some questions before you make a definite decision.

For me it was not that big of a deal, because I liked the hotel anyway.

So - First I filled in an online enrolment and payed the registration fee of €250. After that I got a confirmation by e-mail. The next mail included a summary of the costs and my services. I was informed to sign their AGBs, to prepare an CV as well as a motivation letter. 

This agency also offers help in finding a flight and offers the neccessary insurances which are Travel Health Insurance, Public Liability and Accident Insurance. You have to take out these. Don't just take this one out, but get as many different offers as possible.

As soon as you have prepared the CV and the motivation letter and taken out the insurances the agency forwards your application. Now you have to wait. Consider the time you need for all these preparations, because it could be that it takes some time for the agency to find a placement. Many agency also have a term of application, which was here 3 months. 

Bevor du dich für eine bestimmte Argentur entscheidest, solltest du herausfinden in welche Gegenden sie vermitteln. Also, ob in Städte oder ländliche Gegenden. Sonst machst du den Fehler, den ich gemacht habe. Ich habe nicht davor gefragt. Danach ist frau halt immer schlauer. Ich wollte eigentlich in ein Hotel in einer größeren Stadt, habe aber wohl die Stelle auf der Agentur Seite 'falsch verstanden' an der steht: 'Die Hotels befnden sich in den schönsten Regionen von England, Schottland, Wales und Nordirland, wo eine entsprechende touristische Infrastruktur vorhanden ist.' was dann wohl eindeutig als 'Wir vermitteln hauptsächlich in ländliche Gegenden' zu verstehen ist. Außerdem wird nur EINE Stelle gesucht und vermittelt (so wurde es mir jedenfalls klar gemacht.) Frage also davor lieber ein bisschen zuviel bei der gewünschten Agentur nach, als zu wenig (oder gar nichts!) 

Für mich war es trotz allem dann kein großes Problem, weil mir das Hotel sowieso auf Anhieb sehr gefallen hat. 

So. Als erstes habe ich dann das Online Formular ausgefüllt und die Einschreibungsgebühr von 250 € bezahlt. Dann bekam ich eine Bestätigung per E-Mail. In der nächsten E-Mail waren eine Kostenaufstellung und meine Leistungen aufgelistet. Ich wurde gebeten die AGBs zu unterschreiben und einen Lebenslauf, sowie ein Motivationsschreiben vorzubereiten. Diese Agentur bietet auch Hilfe bei der Suche eines Fluges an und bietet außerdem noch die notwendigen Versicherungen an. Diese sind: Auslandskrankenversicherung Unfallversicherung und Haftpflichtversicherung. Sie müssen abgeschlossen werde. Schließe aber nicht einfach die Versicherung ab, sondern hole dir auch von anderen Quellen so viele verschiedene Angebote wie möglich ein. Sobald du den Lebenslauf und das Motivationsschreiben vorbereitet hast und die Versicherungen abgeschlossen sind, wird deine Bewerbung weitergeleitet. Jetzt heißt es erstmal warten. Vergiss nicht die Zeit einzukalkulieren, die du für diese Vorbereitungen brauchst, da es eine Weile dauern könnte, bis die Agentur eine passende Stelle gefunden hat. Bei vielen Agenturen gibt es eine Anmeldefrist, hier beträgt sie 3 Monate vor Abreise.

Last year I decided to go abroad for one year. I first thought about doing AuPair and so I did two placements in a kindergarten and some courses. I've heard about Programmes like Work & Travel, where you work at a place for maybe 2 weeks and search then for a new one, but that wasn't the right thing for me. Later my mum told me she had heard from someone who worked in a hotel for a whole year in London. I was interested and wrote with that girl. I changed my mind and did a placement in a hotel. That was in April this year. I liked it and it was more in the field I wanted to work in in the future. 

I had already found an agency on the internet which I liked. The agency was called iST iST Work & Travel. So in June I wrote them an e-mail, but they informed me that it was only possible to go to England for 12 months and it was difficult for them to find a placement if you have no work experience. But it seemed my one-week placement, I did in April, was enough work experience. However at that time I only wanted to go to  England for 8 - 9 months. Desperately I searched for another agency and found this page PractiGo Hotelarbeit Großbritannien. It sound great, especially because of the optional language course. I was again worried because of my little work experience, but I'd finally found 'my' agency. 

Im letzten Jahr hatte ich mich zu einem Auslandsjahr entschlossen. Am Anfang war für mich klar ich würde AuPair machen, also machte ich zwei Praktikas in zwei verschiedenen Kindergärten und nahm an Kursen teil. Ich hatte von Programmen wie Work & Travel gehört, bei denen man für vielleicht ca. 2 Wochen an einem Platz arbeitet und dann 'weiterreist' und eine neue Arbeitsstelle sucht. Aber das war nicht das richtige für mich. 

Einige Zeit später erzählte mir meine Mum, das sie von einer gehört hatte, die für ein ganzes Jahr in einem Hotel in London gearbeitet hatte. Das machte mich neugierug und ich schrieb mit ihr. Ich änderte meine Pläne und machte im April 2012 ein Praktikum in einem Hotel. Es gefiel mir und war auch mehr in dem Bereich in dem ich in Zukunft arbeiten wollte. 

Schnell hatte ich eine Agentur gefunden im Internet gefunden, die mir gefiel. Die Agentur nennt sich iST iST Work & Travel. Im Juni schrieb ich ihnen also eine E-Mail, wurde aber informiert, das eine Vermittlung schwierig ist wegen großer Anfrage. Außerdem wurde nur für max 12 Monate vermittelt und Arbeitserfahrung war erforderlich. Mein einwöchiges Praktikum schien zwar zu reichen, aber zu diesem Zeitpunkt wollte ich höchstens für 8 - 9 Monate nach England. Leicht verzweifelt suchte ich nach einer anderen Agentur und fand diese Seite PractiGo Hotelarbeit Großbritannien. Das Angebot gefiel mir vor allem wegen dem optionalen Sprachkurs. Ich machte mir immer noch Sorgen wegen meiner geringen Arbeitserfahrung, doch endlich hatte ich 'meine' Agentur gefunden.

Let's get it started. :) My name is Sandra, I'm 19 and from Germany, Bavaria. This blog will be about my 11 months stay in the UK.
For 11 months I'll be working in a hotel as a waitress. I'm going to write about the preparations, the agency, which organised my placement, the packing and of course my stay.
I'm already leaving for the UK in the beginning of September and I'm in the middle of packing. So first I'm going to tell you what happened till now.
